General Franco - Part III

General Francisco Franco
I have just posted the third article about General Franco. This article focusses on the period of Franco's dictatorship and is the conclusion of my potted biography of Franco.

As a footnote, Franco's impact on Spain to this day cannot be ignored: it will probably be many more decades before Spain is fully free of his mark.

Hello, I'm just passerby from Barcelona.

I'm just curious, why you are interested in this theme, Franco,
who is very taboo to talk about still in Spain...

Hi nieves,

I am interested in Franco because of the profound impact he has had on Spain to this day.

I think that anyone who is interested in Spain and would like to get to know (or at least begin to understand) the Spain of today should be aware of Franco and his dictatorship. When the dictatorship eventually ended (after over 40 years - a period of rule that has clearly left a mark Spain) some incredible social and political changes took place in a very short space of time.

Also I am personally very interested in the Spanish Civil War... a war in which Franco played a very significant part in also... indeed the Nationalist victory over the Republicans led to Franco's dictatorship.

My interest in Franco is directly related to the Civil War and what happened as a consequence. The ruthlessness with which dissenters of any dictatorship are treated always staggers me and Franco's regime was no different.

I believe it is important for us all to remember Franco in the same way it is important to remember people like Hitler. In both cases we are not talking about events that happened a long time ago... and history can and does repeat itself. Consequently I think it is vital to know about certain historical events in order to understand who we are today.

I understand what you say about the subject of Franco still being taboo in Spain... this too is testament to the significance of his period of rule.
